Chamber of Secrets Party: The Hunt

Tuesday, June 19, 2018

The Chamber of Secrets party ended with a hunt that I created for the students. It was a sort of mix of scavenger hunt, escape-room-style puzzles & keys, and Clue. The instructions for the hunt were given in a diary entry.

The 'students' were given a checklist (clue-style) and their first clue. They assigned one girl to be their checklist keeper. Each student took turns reading the clues, I was very impressed at their teamwork at this age! They made sure everyone had a chance to read the clues, and all worked together to both find and solve the clues.

Each clue was provided by a professor. Some were riddles, some were puzzles- it was a fun mix of solving clues and hunting for the next clue once they knew where their clue led.

For example:

The students needed to solve the riddle (a glove), then they needed to find the glove.

Another clue was a math puzzle. The solved numbers were the 3 digit code to open a locked box.

Each clue card they found was found with a card of a Suspect, Beast, or Location. That card was checked off the list, as we knew that they were not 'guilty.'

Each Suspect, Beast, & Location was numbered on the checklist. Once the students found all of the clues (and thus, all of the cards), they were left with only one Suspect, Beast, and Location that was the answer to the game.

The number of associated with each [Suspect - Beast - Location] is entered into a final lock which completes the game!

What I love about the game setup is that I designed it to allow the cards to be mixed up. Much like Clue, you can shuffle the Suspects, Beasts, and Locations and set a new end game. While the clues are the same, you can shuffle the order of them, and where the item they lead to is hidden (ex. if the answer to the clue is 'glove,' the glove can be hidden somewhere new), which allows for the game to be replayed with different results.
